2nd Citywide PUSH

On Friday July 17, Fan Free Clinic in conjunction with organizations from around the city are hosting the second Citywide PUSH (Partners Unlocking Syphilis and HIV) event. On this day, HIV/Syphilis testing sites are set up around the city, and the goal is to test as many people as possible throughout the course of the day. CLICK HERE TO FIND OUT WHERE/WHEN YOU CAN GET TESTED!  The first Citywide PUSH event was held on December 12, 2008, and was extremely successful. This event begins at 12 noon and will end at midnight.

During the day of the event, we are in need of health outreach volunteers to pass out educational materials and promote the event in areas close to the testing sites. These volunteers are crucial to the success and outcome of the event. While having previous health outreach experience is always a plus, it is a not a requirement, and volunteers will be trained on site by the team leader for that location. We will also offer a brief training prior to the event for anyone that is interested in attending. You do NOT have to attend the training in order to volunteer for the event.  If you have had previous health outreach experience and would be interested in becoming a team leader for a specific location, please let us know.  If you just have a genuine interest in getting involved with your community, then WE NEED YOU!

Attached you will find a listing of the specific locations and times in which we are requesting volunteers. We are very fortunate to have an FFC intern named Kelly McDaniel handling the coordination of the volunteers.  If you are interested in volunteering, please send an email to Kelly and let her know where you can help out. You may pick any location and shift that is available. It is also great if you are willing to go wherever the need is greatest.  You can also email Kelly or me with any questions or concerns you have regarding being a volunteer for this event.  This is a fantastic and fun opportunity to get involved in the community and is a great group activity, so recruit some friends and join us for Citywide PUSH!

05/06/09 - FFC Hosts Foreign Visitors

Fan Free Clinic's Department of Health Outreach welcomed three visitors on May 6 hosted by the National Association of State and Territorial AIDS Directors (NASTAD) and the Division of Disease Prevention of the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) including Dr. Lebelonyane, Director of Primary Health Care Services, Ministry of Local Government (Botswana). Shawn McNulty, Director of Health Outreach, gave the group a tour of Fan Free Clinic including an overview of Health Education and Outreach with a special emphasis on HIV prevention and testing. Fan Free Clinic was grateful for this opportunity to meet Dr. Lebelonyane and provide information and materials that will relate to her work in Botswana.

Shawn McNulty explains how HIV testing data is captured and compiled by FFC Health Outreach staff.

Dr. Lebelonyane is given a tour of Health Outreach, including the inventory of HIV prevention materials and supplies.

04/29/09 - Thank you, Anthem/Wellpoint

Anthem volunteers supported Fan Free Clinic by working at the Health and Wellness Fair held here on April 25 as part of Wellpoint's National Community Service Day. This initiative happens on a single weekend in April every year and places Anthem volunteers in non-profit organizations in over 145 cities spanning more than 30 states and the District of Columbia. We are grateful to these wonderful volunteers for their energy and enthusiasm--and for helping us open our doors to more people in need of health care and related services.

04/22/09 - What a supper!

FFC wishes to thank our supporters, volunteers and staff who came toegther on Tuesday, April 21st, for our annual Ride to Provide Spaghetti Dinner fundraiser.  More than 120 dinners were served, helping us to raise funds that, in turn, allow us to host our annual Ride to Provide cycling fundraiser.  We'd also like to thank Joe's Inn, St. Mark's Episcopal Church and Starbucks Coffee in the Fan for supporting our event once again this year.  Great fun, great food and great friends - making for a great night.  Thanks again!

04/08/09 - Our heartfelt thanks...

On Tuesday evening, March 31, something extraordinary happened. The Fun For a Cause event—“Lighting the torch for community togetherness” was held at The Renaissance Conference Center to benefit Fan Free Clinic. This spectacular event raised $7,500 for Fan Free Clinic but it did even more—it accomplished the mission of lighting the torch for community togetherness.   It is estimated that 500 people were there throughout the course of the evening. This extraordinary event was planned and implemented by a dedicated group of individuals in an effort to bring Richmond’s gay community together for a common cause. The Fun for a Cause committee worked tirelessly beginning in December to re-vitalize a concept for the GLBT community to join together and create a positive event while igniting community awareness. The people responsible include the planning committee—Emmett Hickam, Robert Friedline, Charles Dishman, Jonathan Bennett and Kenny Newcomb—and Tommy Waters and the rest of the staff at The Renaissance Conference Center. The performers danced their hearts out—and all their tips were donated to Fan Free Clinic, in addition to numerous cash and in-kind donations that helped make the event a resounding success.

At Fan Free Clinic, identifying need has never been an issue, but ensuring that there are competent and available services for those in need, especially those newly diagnosed with HIV, is a must. Currently, we provide HIV testing services to nearly 2,000 individuals each year. We are extraordinarily grateful to the Fun For A Cause event planning committee for their visionary stance on finding a fun way to bring a community together for a common cause.

The Fan Free Clinic ice sculpture welcomed attendees while adding elegance and drama to a most memorable evening.

Don’t Let It Slip Away…

Can you imagine what it would be like to live without health insurance? Now, can you imagine that you are jobless and the mother of three children without enough to eat? Can you imagine that? We can—because we see people in that situation everyday. People like Sondra who came to Fan Free Clinic for help—suffering from untreated diabetes, hypertension and a litany of illnesses brought on by the neglect of not having proper medicine and nutrition. Now imagine that you have to choose between buying the proper medication for yourself and feeding your children. What would you do?

That’s where Fan Free Clinic comes in and the wonderful people who support the work that goes on here everyday. Now, more than ever, we have a special reason for you to help Sondra and so many people like her. The E. Rhodes and Leona B. Carpenter Foundation has supported many Richmond organizations in significant ways. This year, they have offered Fan Free Clinic a challenge. If we raise $25,000 in funds from individuals, they will match it dollar for dollar. We have raised $17,156 so far and have until December 2009 to complete the challenge.

Please mail in or make your donation today online at this site. We have an additional $25,000 coming our way from the Carpenter Foundation and Fan Free Clinic will receive it with your help. Please…don’t let it slip away.
